In 2001 VRO published a book
concerning our current knowledge about zinc-sulfur propellants. This book,
written by Antoon Vyverman, describes in 8 chapters and 84 pages the different
aspects of the propellant. It provides information to most of the questions
rocket amateurs are confronted with when using this propellant:

Could you tell me the relation between burning rate and pressure for Zn/S propellant ?
Is there any equation like r = bP^n that is possible to be considered for this type of fuel ?
If I know burning surface and throat diameter how can I determine pressure?
Can I use the same equations as I use for other solid rocket fuels ?

I wrote a program to calculate to calculate the thrust and pressure of a 3/1 zinc-sulfur powder motor. The software provides the possibility to
calculate the expected performance of a rocket motor filled with zinc-sulfur
powder with following composition: 66,5 %
zinc powder and 33.5 % sulfur.
The program can be downloaded from our Library. See at the end of the article for direct links.

It is well know that the ignition of a KNO3-sorbitol motor is sometimes a challenge. It happens that only a small surface of the motor gets ignited, expecially the top and bottom surfaces of the different segments of a Bates burner. When this happens when launching a rocket with a KNO3-sorbitol motor, it can results in dangerous stability situations.

The ZAS5P-2 is a cigarette burner provided with a monoblock of cast Zn-S-Al. The objective of the test was to confirm earlier test results with the addition of 10% aluminum.
As in previous tests with cigarette burners the throat was 8 mm or a ratio of Ap/At of 44. Earlier test (ZAS5-1 en ZAS5-2) have indicated that an Ap/At of 29 is still possible for a good functioning.
