AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands EUR - While the United States appears to be trying to asphyxiate hobby rocketry via over-regulation, Dutch leaders in The Netherlands openly embrace the sport with the recent enactment of new laws that recognize and legitimize the flying of model and high power rockets within the tiny northwestern European country.

Understanding Zinc Sulfur Propellants

E-mail
Geschreven door Tony Vyverman
dinsdag, 15 augustus 2006

In 2001 VRO published a book concerning our current knowledge about zinc-sulfur propellants. This book, written by Antoon Vyverman, describes in 8 chapters and 84 pages the different aspects of the propellant. It provides information to most of the questions rocket amateurs are confronted with when using this propellant:

  • for Zn-S powder motors
    • what happens in Zn-S powder motors
  • predicting the thrust curve based on the nozzle area and the total propellant mass
    • The pressures that can be expected
    • the best nozzle shapes for highest impulse
    • how to ignite and the influence of the type of ignition on the thrust curve
    • how to prepare Zn-S propellants for hot cast propellants:
  • what temperatures are needed for proper liquefaction
  • what happens with the grain during solidification
  • the problem of several cigarette grains
  • the burning rate mechanism
  • how to control burning rate with sulfur content
  • how to get an Isp of 60s and more

The book can be purchased at this web-site in the VRO eShop.
